It’s All About the Founders: Investment Lessons

Two years into my startup investment journey, I’ve learned one crucial truth: it’s all about the founders. And for those skeptical investors out there, this message is especially for you!

I was very nervous to bet on someone else other than me, in the beginning but I realized over time it’s going to be a hit or a miss. All you can do is hedge the miss by your experience and research.

Some of these bets paid off, others tanked badly.

– If you play the game long enough you will find your own ‘black book strategy’ to make better decisions, to have better terms and conditions and ultimately be a better mentor (sometimes means actively being involved, sometimes it means to take the back seat and let the founders shine).

– All my investments were India based and I am continuing to bet on India while slowly expanding to other regions. Choose your region wisely.

-I invest in the most unorganized way, it’s not through VC funds, or Angel investing – well atleast not till now, it’s through coffee table conversations and age old friendships.

My message to the skeptic investor just like me few years back, is don’t be disheartened by a miss and not too excited by your first few wins. Just keep playing the game with the intention of mutual growth, hedge your risks as much as you can and dont be boxed by organised investing.

My message to the passionate realistic founders, reach out to friends in your network you never know who believes in you and is willing to bet on you also let’s talk.
